Anthropic has introduced a new voice mode for its AI chatbot Claude, marking a significant step in making AI assistants more conversational and hands-free. The feature is currently in beta and available on both iOS and Android platforms.
Anthropic Adds Voice to Claude AI
San Francisco-based AI company Anthropic has rolled out voice capabilities for Claude, its AI chatbot, allowing users to engage in natural, spoken conversations with the assistant. With this update, Claude can now listen, respond, and display key information in real-time — blending voice interaction with on-screen intelligence.
The voice mode is available in the Claude mobile app for Android and iOS. Users can toggle seamlessly between speaking and typing within the same chat session.
According to Anthropic, the goal of this rollout is to make Claude more accessible and useful in day-to-day situations such as driving, cooking, or multitasking at work.
How Claude’s Voice Mode Works
The feature uses real-time speech recognition and synthetic speech technology to facilitate two-way spoken interaction. When activated, Claude listens to user commands and responds with a chosen voice profile while displaying summarised content on-screen.
Currently, Claude offers five voice options: Buttery, Airy, Mellow, Glassy, and Rounded — each designed to match different tones and preferences.
Key Highlights of the Update
-
Live Voice Interaction: Users can now speak to Claude and get instant audio responses, with visual summaries displayed on-screen.
-
Customizable Voices: Five voice styles allow users to personalize the assistant’s tone.
-
Flexible Input: Seamless switching between text and voice without interrupting the conversation flow.
-
Google Integration: Pro users can connect Claude to Gmail, Calendar, and Docs to retrieve information and perform tasks via voice.
Claude’s Expansion Beyond Text
Claude’s voice mode puts Anthropic in direct competition with voice-enabled assistants like Apple’s Siri, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. However, unlike traditional voice assistants, Claude runs on Claude 3.5, one of the most advanced language models currently available — known for nuanced reasoning, safety controls, and contextual awareness.
Anthropic’s CTO, Jared Kaplan, said in a recent statement, “The future of AI assistants is multi-modal. Voice is a natural next step in bringing these tools closer to human interaction.”
What’s Next for Claude?
While the voice feature is still in beta, Anthropic has indicated plans to improve its real-time capabilities and expand integrations with third-party apps. A desktop voice version is also reportedly under development.
As the AI space heats up with competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice and Google's Gemini, Claude’s new voice mode could help set it apart by combining advanced reasoning with an intuitive voice-first interface.
